Apprenticeships in construction and civil engineering are in high demand; the construction industry is central to creating homes, schools, hospitals, energy and transport, infrastructure society needs. The career opportunities are endless for skilled construction workers whether you are the first tradesperson on site, providing first or second-fix services, carrying out remedial work, or extending properties in a commercial or domestic environment.

As an apprentice you will learn to work safely and with dexterity in a technically complex industrial environment. You will be reliable and dependable and learn to gain the essential skills required to produce quality work for a range of customers.

You will complete three stages during your construction and civils apprenticeship journey; stage one is learning the skills, knowledge and behaviours you need, and collect evidence along the way to demonstrate how you have applied them to your practice.

Stage two is reached when you have gathered all the evidence needed, and together with your employer and Skills Group mentor, agree you are ready for end-point assessment. This is called assessment gateway. The final stage is to book your end-point assessment. End-point assessment requirements vary from apprenticeship to another, but are always carried out by an independent assessor.

There are unlimited opportunities to develop your career after completing an apprenticeship in construction and civil engineering; you may choose to progress onto a higher level apprenticeship to develop your skills, move into a more senior role or undertake further supervisory training and qualifications so that you can lead and manage teams of workers.

Laying bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures. You will be working in the construction industry and providing a core function, and the demand for bricklayers has never been higher. You will learn how to work in a safe manner whilst producing high quality work in order to provide a quality service to your customers, and build a valued reputation within the industry.

Bricklayer / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

Preparing and installing complex and bespoke building components. You will have already gained carpentry and joinery skills within the construction industry in either domestic or commercial properties. You will learn how to interpret technical specifications, take the lead when working in a team and carry out complex work to a high standard.

Advanced Carpentry and Joinery / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

Interpreting design specifications to prepare a construction site ready for services and structural building works to take place. You will be working in a high demand industry, working closely with supervisors and engineers in interpreting design specifications to ensure the client’s needs are met. You will learn how to use power tools and equipment safely, gauge and mix mortars, install safety
equipment and locate and excavate buried utility services following risk management procedures.

Groundworker / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

Ensure that buildings are in a safe working condition. You will be working to optimise property condition to ensure that the building is kept in a safe working condition. You will learn the mechanisms of buildings including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment to be called upon as the first response to fault finding and carrying out safe repairs.

Property Maintenance Operative / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

Installing a wide range of replacement and new fenestration products in structures, such as doors, windows and curtain walling. You will provide services in the new build and refurbishment construction sector, and can often be the most impressive feature of a building. You will learn how to interpret work plans, use a broad range of materials, tools and equipment, and fit and finish a range of products safely and to a quality standard.

Fenestration Installer / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

Manufacturing fenestration products such as windows, doors, shop fronts and walls. You will fabricate fenestration products in a range of materials to supply to the retail and domestic market, housebuilders, commercial and public sectors. You will learn how to safely use fabrication equipment, accurately follow detailed specifications to form the finished product.
