McKinlay Martyn are offering a fantastic opportunity for two Hairdressing Apprentices, to work within a vibrant hairdressing salon in Torquay.

The Apprentice’s Role

Your role will include meeting & greeting clients and booking appointments. You will also be shampooing, conditioning, blow drying and styling hair and using a range of techniques including colour and lightening.

You’ll study hairdressing topics such as hair and skin testing, the effects of chemicals on hair and skin, and the principles of hair colour selection, alongside environmental and sustainable working practices. There’s also the option to learn about promoting products, perming, and working with different hair types.

Working Hours: The successful candidate will be working 40 hours per week over 5 days (Open from Monday – Saturday). Possible late night training session once a week.

Wages: £172.00 per week.

Holiday: You will be entitled to 28 days holiday, including bank holidays, will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work well within a team, and to be able to portray a positive friendly attitude to customers at all times.

Candidates will need to be enthusiastic about training, have a creative flair and a genuine passion for the hairdressing industry. Building good relationships with clients is a vital part of a successful salon so excellent interpersonal skills are required.

Personal Qualities

Excellent communication skills, high standards of hygiene and appearance are essential. Being a keen team player is essential for any salon apprentice, you will learn how to demonstrate this consistently to ensure that you promote a positive image at all times.

Prior Qualifications

Qualifications desirable for this role include GCSE A*-E in English and Maths or the equivalent such as Functional Skills, but not essential as having the enthusiasm and a willingness to succeed are more important.

The Apprenticeship in Hairdressing includes:

• Level 2 Hair Professional (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Level 2 Diploma for Hair Professionals (Hairdressing / Barbering)
• Functional Skills in Maths and English

Some aspects of the qualification will be delivered on-site and you will have regular visits every 6 to 12 weeks from your designated assessor from Skills Group, who will monitor your progression throughout your apprenticeship.

As part of your apprenticeship you will be expected to attend college one day per week, where you will improve upon your knowledge and practical skills.
